COVID-19: Any improvised cloth mask is allowed at community level - Mamora

- Nigeria's minister of state for health approves the use of improvised cloth masks to be worn by residents

Adeleke Mamora, the minister of state for health, has said that medical masks don't have to be necessarily worn by members of the public, rather improvised cloth masks can be used as it is allowed at the community level.

Mamora while noting this during the briefing by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, on Tuesday, April 21, urged residents to avoid using masks made with nylon or polyester materials Channels TV reports.

According to the minister, this would still go a long way in reducing the risk of the spread of the COVID-19.

“The need to avoid mass gatherings without protecting yourself cannot be overemphasized. The use of face masks or barriers that covers your mouth and nose, has been scientifically proven to reduce the spread of respiratory infection.

“I, therefore, urge all Nigerians to practice hand and respiratory hygiene. The improvised cloth mask will suffice at the community level,” he said.

Mamora went on to note that measures have been taken to curb the increasing rate of community transmission, adding that the federal government has intensified efforts in risk communication at the grassroots level.

He said: “With the community transmission, we are doing active case search in communities and this strategy requires more testing kits and diagnostics. Currently, we are accessing additional laboratories for accreditation and we will announce more laboratories soon. We have 13 so far”.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the presidential task force on the coronavirus pandemic has asked tailors all over the country to start producing face masks using local fabrics such as ankara and others.

Chairman of the task force and the secretary to the government of the federation, Boss Mustapha, made the plea during its daily briefing in Abuja on Thursday, April 16. Mustapha stated that this would encourage people to wear face masks whenever they are outside their homes.

In a related development, the federal government says it is placing Kano, Oyo, Osun and Edo under its watch as the cases of coronavirus in the states set a string of concerns with a sudden rise in the last few days.

Speaking during the briefing of the presidential task force on COVID-19 in Abuja on Tuesday, April 21, Sani Aliyu said the growing number of cases in the states is becoming worrisome.
