Kano records 23 new cases of COVID-19 in one day, now has 59 infected patients

Kano has recorded 23 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases in the state to 59.
This was disclosed in a tweet by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Monday night, April 20, as the agency said 38 new cases were recorded across Nigeria.
This is the highest daily number of confirmed cases reported so far in the northern state since the index case was reported in Nigeria back in February.
This development is coming after the Kano government dismissed a rumour which claimed that coronavirus has caused mass deaths in the state.

The state ministry of health in a statement on Monday, April 20, through a series of tweets, said the state task force on COVID-19 has found the rumours to be false.
The government said state officials deployed to all burial grounds to count bodies brought in for burial every day found the rumour to be untrue. It accused the media and rumour mongers of trying to cause panic in the state.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Kano state's ministry of health confirmed the state's first death from the coronavirus disease.
The ministry announced the death in a tweet posted in the late hours of Wednesday, April 15. Details of the death were not given but the ministry said there were 21 total cases of COVID-19 in the state, as against the 16 recorded for the state by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
“Wednesday, 15th April 2020. As at 11:55 pm, 1 death of #COVID19 has been recorded in Kano state,” the tweet read.
In a related development, the co-chairman of the Kano state COVID-19 Taskforce, Prof Abdulaziz Habib, has allegedly tested positive for the virus.
According to Vanguard newspaper, Professor Habib’s test result was one of the 12 released on Wednesday, April 15, by the Kano state's Ministry of Health.
Citing an anonymous source, the newspaper reports that Professor Habib is on admission at the state's isolation centre at Kwanar Dawaki.
