Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: Arteta told to sell Mustafi, Mkhitaryan to keep striker

- Mustafi and Mkhitaryan have had a difficult spell at Arsenal, with the former often coming under sharp criticism from fans

- With Aubameyang facing an uncertain future, Charlie Nicholas is suggesting the duo should be sold to fund the Gabonese's new contract

- Aubameyang has scored 61 times in 97 matches since joining the Gunners and he is a key squad member for Mikel Arteta

Former Arsenal star Charlie Nicholas has advised Mikel Arteta to offload the pair of Shkodran Mustafi and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to raise funds for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's new contract.

Both Mkhitaryan and Mustafi have endured a difficult spell at the Emirates, with Mkhitaryan leaving the Gunners on a season-long loan switch to AS Roma last summer.

And with Aubameyang stalling on a new deal, Nicholas believes selling of the two Gunners players could collect enough to convince Aubameyang stay.

The former Borussia Dortmund star has just a year left on his current deal with the north London side, and handing him the captaincy role has not helped much in having him commit his future to the club.

"You can get rid of Shkodran Mustafi and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who has been out on loan. This will all help to filter through, so there are easy things to do," the former Arsenal star told Sporting Life.

"Give him what he wants, get rid of dead wood, you have the kids, and it would not cost £200m to challenge for the top four once more. My preference would be to offer Aubameyang what he wants," he added.

Having found the back of the net 61 times in 97 appearances in an Arsenal shirt, Arteta is desperate to keep hold of his talisman.

It is believed Arsenal's lack of trophies in recent seasons could be reason behind Aubameyang wanting out.

The Emirates outfit were ninth in the Premier League before the 2019/20 campaign was suspended and already face the prospect of missing out on a Champions League place.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Man United are among the top European clubs that have been widely linked with Aubameyang.
