Coronavirus: Kano COVID-19 taskforce co-chairman reportedly tests positive

The co-chairman of the Kano state COVID-19 Taskforce, Prof Abdulaziz Habib, has allegedly tested positive for the virus.

According to Vanguard newspaper, Professor Habib’s test result was one of the 12 released on Wednesday, April 15, by the Kano state's Ministry of Health.

Citing an anonymous source, the newspaper reports that Professor Habib is on admission at the state's isolation centre at Kwanar Dawaki.

Professor Habib is reportedly an epidemiologist and has been actively involved in the rapid response to all the confirmed cases in Kano.

He was said to have contracted the virus during clinical services, according to a senior member of the task force, Vanguard adds.

The respected scholar had reportedly participated in the initial characterization of a new emerging infection Coronavirus-Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (CoV-SARS) in Singapore.

He currently teaches modules on the immune response to infectious HIV/AID, tuberculosis, snakebite sepsis, parasite infection and typhoid fever at Bayero University, Kano.

Also trained at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the physician has reportedly been directly involved in several clinical epidemiology studies and earns a globally certified award of excellence.

Vanguard notes that it could not reach the Kano state commissioner for health, Dr Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa, to confirm the development.

Recall that Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje inaugurated the task force on Saturday, March 21.

The task force is led by the deputy governor, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, and co-chaired by Professor Habib.

The task force's core mandate includes quick response to contain the spread of COVID-19 pandemic in Kano and effective management of cases.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the Kano state government again rejected the figure of the coronavirus cases in the state reported as by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The NCDC had on Thursday, April 16, said that the country recorded 35 new cases of coronavirus of which it noted that Kano state recorded five cases.

However, in his reaction, Dawisu, an aide to the Kano state governor said the figure given by the NCDC on coronavirus cases in the state was false.
