President Buhari holds video conference with COVID-19 task force

As part of measures to adhere to the social distancing, President Mummammadu Buhari on Wednesday, April 15, held a teleconference with members of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.

A presidential aide, Femi Adesina who shared photos of Buhari making the teleconference, disclosed that the president made the video call from statehouse in Abuja.

Nigeria's minister of communication and digital economy, Isa Ali Pantami said the videoconference facilities were installed in the office of the president to promote social distancing in governance.

Meanwhile, amid intensified efforts on the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered that 4,000 COVID-19 tests should be conducted daily.

Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, director-general of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), made this known during the presidential task force meeting on COVID-19 on Wednesday, April 15.

Ihekweazu said the president mandated the NCDC to increase testing in Lagos to 2,000; FCT, 1,000 and the rest of Nigeria to 1,000 per day.

The DG of NCDC also disclosed that wide-range testing and effective tracking of the COVID-19 cases by the health personnel are some of the major banes impending the fight against coronavirus.

Speaking during the daily conference on the presidential task force on COVID-19 on Tuesday, April 14, the NCDC chief director said the federal government has successfully solved the problem of laboratory testing capacity.

Ihekweazu, however, said the disease control centre has not been able to find a solution to "how active our public health workforce is in identifying suspected cases and collecting samples.

Still on health, the results of twenty-two people who were tested for COVID-19 by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) laboratory in Abuja was on Tuesday, April 14, released by the Gombe state government.

Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya in a live broadcast said the suspected cases of coronavirus sent for testing returned negative, Daily Trust reports.

According to the governor, a special task force on coronavirus in the state chaired by Professor Idris Mohammed had identified twenty-two suspected cases and sent the samples for testing.

Yahaya further said that the results have shown that the measures being taken to curb the spread of the disease are effective.

He urged Gombe state residents to support the efforts of the government at containing the spread of coronavirus in the state.
