COVID-19: President Buhari cites legal regulation backing lockdown extension

President Muhammadu Buhari has cited legal regulation to back his decision to extend the lockdown in Lagos, Abuja and Ogun state for another two weeks to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

The Nigerian president in a statement on Monday evening, April 13, stated that he extended the lockdown in the three states in the exercise of the powers conferred on him by sections 3 and 4 of the Quarantine Act and all other powers enabling him to take the decision, NTA news reports.
With the signing of the regulation No 2 of 2020 by Buhari, there will now be restriction of movements on residents of the affected areas till April 28.
The statement issued by the president about the legal basis for his action read in part:
"I, Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by sections 3 and 4 of the Quarantine Act and all other powers enabling me in that behalf, make the following Regulations
"Extension of Restriction/cessation of Movement in Lagos, FCT and Ogun State
"The restriction/cessation of movement in Lagos State, the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and Ogun State is extended for a further period of 14 days with effect from Tuesday 14th April, 2020."
Meanwhile, in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus in Ekiti state, Governor Kayode Fayemi on Monday, April 13, extended the COVID-19 lockdown by an additional two weeks.
This information was disclosed in a statement issued by Biodun Oyebanji, the secretary to the state government and shared on the Twitter account of the governor.
However, Fayemi noted that restriction of movement during the lockdown will be relaxed on Thursdays, April 16 and April 23, between 6 am and 2 pm to enable residents to restock their homes with essentials.
The Ekiti state governor went on to note that wearing of facemasks in public places as from Tuesday, April 14, is now compulsory. He added that plans are being finalized to make the masks available for those on essential duties.

With the extension, the school on-line education programme for primary and secondary school students would continue, while gatherings of over twenty people are still prohibited. Fayemi while noting that the extension is deliberately planned, said existing restrictions remain in force alongside the dusk to dawn curfew till Monday, April 27 when the lockdown order will expire.
