6.9bn loan: Stop profiteering, looting with COVID-19, PDP tells FG

- The PDP has alleged that the federal government is using the coronavirus pandemic as an excuse to loot Nigeria

- The opposition party stated that government officials are diverting billions of naira meant for palliatives to citizens

- The PDP also accused the Buhari's government of making plans for a $6.9billion foreign borrowing without any clear cut plan

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that officials of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government are using the deadly COVID-19 pandemic as a gateway for corrupt profiteering and looting of the nation's treasury.

The party made the allegation in a statement sent to journalists on Saturday, April 11 by its spokesman, Kola Ologbodiyan.

The opposition party lamented that “allegations of diversion of billions of naira meant for palliatives to vulnerable citizens is already frustrating the commitment by Nigerians and other well-meaning groups in the overall effort to combat the spread of the scourge in our country.”

“Our party is worried over the activities of certain officials who are using the COVID-19 pandemic to create and manipulate situations that circumvent financial documentation and accountability rules and pave way for the looting of our treasury and borrowed funds, while the people are left at the mercy of the plague,” the PDP stated.

The PDP further accused the Buhari's government of mopping up Nigeria's international reserves and making plans for a $6.9 billion foreign borrowing without any clear cut plan.

“This is amidst allegations of plots by unscrupulous officials to manipulate the system and create a channel for a slush fund that will be diverted to corrupt APC leaders and the cabal while mortgaging the future of our nation's generation yet unborn,” the PDP stated.

The party called on the National Assembly to protect Nigerians by immediately scaling up its oversight activities on the handling of the COVID-19 social intervention funding.

Meanwhile, an APC chieftain, Salihu Lukman, has called on the federal government to extend the COVID-19 lockdown nationwide.

Appraising the success of the two weeks lockdown at the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos and Ogun states by President Buhari, Lukman expressed disappointment over the attitude of certain state governors.

According to him, a national lockdown was necessary for the country not to throw away the gains achieved by its proactive measure of the last two weeks.
