Norman Hunter, England and Leeds United legend, contracts coronavirus

England and Leeds United legend Norman Hunter has been tested positive for the deadly coronavirus and the 76-year-old is now in the hospital receiving treatments.

Norman Hunter was among the English players who won the 1966 FIFA World Cup for the first and only time for England up till today.

He spent most of his playing career with Leeds United where he played for 17 years and made 723 games for the English side.

Leeds United however released a statement on Friday, April 10, that their legend has contracted coronavirus and he is currently being treated in the hospital.

“We can confirm that Leeds United and England legend Norman Hunter is being treated in hospital after testing positive for COVID-19.

“We would like to take this opportunity to remind the public and the media to respect the wishes of Norman and his family and to give them the space they need during this difficult time,'' Leeds explained in official statement.

Between 1965 and 1974, Norman Hunter made 28 appearances for England national team before he retired.

He also won the League Cup title at Leeds United during his active playing time.

Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how Premier League organisers debunked claims they are planning to have the remainder of the 2019/20 season cancelled over coronavirus pandemic.

The campaign, like many other across Europe is currently suspended in an effort to combat further spread of the virus which has claimed thousands of lives globally.

With the epidemic not slowing down, there has been suggestion the Premier League could be cancelled altogether.

Recently, Udinese director Pierpaolo Marino sparked panic among football fans when he suggested Premier League chiefs are set to announce an end to the season.

Udinese, an Italian club and EPL's Watford are owned by the same family and Marino divulged to Italian media the English league campaign was finished.

The Premier League have now been forced to deny the reports, with a spokesperson telling Manchester Evening News there was no such statement in the works, terming Marino’s comments as ‘inaccurate.'
