Cristian Hidalgo says no one at Barcelona expected Messi to be club's greatest

- Cristian Hidalgo has rated Lionel Messi higher than any player in Barcelona's history

- Hidalgo explained that no one knew Messi will be a great player

- Lionel Messi has gone on to win six Ballon d'Or awards so far

Barcelona captain Lionel Messi is one of the greatest footballers ever in the world considering what he has achieved so far since he started playing for the Spanish champions.

But ex-Barcelona player Cristian Hidalgo has explained that no body at the Camp Nou thought years back that Lionel Messi would ever go on to become one of the greatest in history of soccer.

Lionel Messi actually started his football career back home in Argentina before he was taken to Barcelona famous academy La Masia at the age of 13.

During that time when Lionel Messi broke into Barcelona's team, Cristian Hidalgo was also at the Nou Camp even though he never had a successful career with the Catalans.

Today, history will bare witness that Lionel Messi is the first player ever on earth to win six Ballon d'Or awards with his arch rival Cristiano Ronaldo winning five.

"Leo was an incredible talent. Everyone in the club knew that he would one day be a very good player.

"But the best ever? No. Nobody could have foreseen that. Leo's accomplishments are unique. He was very shy, very introverted. He actually only spoke when it was necessary.

"As he played more and started scoring goals, he thawed a little and joked around more." he told Goal and Spox.

Meanwhile, Cristian Hidalgo made only one appearance for Barcelona in topflight before going on to join Deportivo La Coruna in 2016.

Lionel Messi on the other hand has won everything at Barcelona with only the FIFA World Cup remaining for him to win so far in his career.
