Chinese nationals kidnapped in Ebonyi regain freedom - Police

- Some Chinese nationals who were kidnapped by some gunmen have regained their freedom

- The development was confirmed by the police command in Ebonyi state on Thursday, April 2

- The police said that the Chinese citizens have been reunited with their families

Amid coronavirus, the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has confirmed that some Chinese citizens who were kidnapped by some gunmen in Ebonyi have regained their freedom.

Speaking on the development on Thursday, April 2, Loveth Odah, the police spokesperson in the state, revealed that the freedom of the captives came about after much pressure from officers, The Nation reports.

Odah: “The victims were released unharmed as a result of the sustained pressure mounted by the Police operatives.

"The victims have been since reunited with their community. Meanwhile, Police is on a manhunt for the bandit.”

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the Chinese embassy in Nigeria had disclosed that contrary to reports, Nigerians residing in Wuhan, the Chinese city where coronavirus broke out are 60 in number and not 16 as earlier claimed by Lai Mohammed, minister of information.

Zhou Pingjian, Chinese ambassador to Nigeria, made the disclosure at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, February 3.

Pingjian said the Nigerians in Wuhan were adhering to the advisory issued by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

He said the Nigerian embassy in China was in communication with Nigerians in the Chinese city.

The ambassador said the Chinese government is taking steps to keep both Chinese citizens and foreign nationals, including Nigerians safe. He also said there might be 40,000 or 50,000 Chinese nationals in Nigeria and that most of them are in Lagos.

The Chinese envoy said Chinese nationals to follow the travel advisory issued by the World Health Organisation.

Meanwhile, following the government's assurance that coronavirus can be contained if it finds its way into the country, Nigerians have claimed that they don't trust the federal government over it. This was contained in response to polls conducted by Legit.ng on Twitter and Facebook.

Among Facebook users, 82% of Nigerians said they don't trust the FG in containing the spread of the virus while only 18% back the government to contain it.

On the other hand, the majority of respondents on Twitter also said they don't trust the FG. Specifically, 63% say they don't trust the FG while those that trust the FG and those who are unsure share the same 15%.
