The Lagos state commissioner of health, Akin Abayomi, on Wednesday, April 1, said coronavirus is not a death sentence.

Abayomi made the statement in reference to five coronavirus patients who were discharged on Monday, March 30, after they tested negative for the disease.

Quoting one of the discharged patients in a series of tweets, Abayomi described the disease as a waiting game.

Abayomi's statement came as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed 12 new cases of coronavirus infection, taking the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 151.

The NCDC in a tweet on Wednesday, April 1, stated that nine of the cases were detected in Osun state, two in Edo and one in Ekiti state.

Meanwhile, NCDC has said that face masks may become compulsory commodities for all citizens as coronavirus cases rise.

The director-general, Chikwe Ihekweazu, said that the federal government is considering the use of the item to fight against the spread of the global pandemic in the country, This Day reports.

Ihekweazu noted that although the World Health Organisation (WHO) has not approved the use of face masks for other persons apart from health workers, the situation in Nigeria is necessitating the consideration.

However, the NCDC boss said that the agency is considering a lot of factors before implementing the policy.

In another report, the war against coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic hit a massive breakthrough as Oyo government confirmed the discharge of the index case in the state.

Taiwo Adisa, the chief press secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo, made this known in a statement on Monday, March 30, The Nation reports.

According to Adisa, the index case was discharged after the completion of his treatment at the Agbami Chest Hospital Isolation Centre in Ibadan.

He stressed that the patient, an American returnee, tested negative to two consecutive coronavirus tests.

Meanwhile, following the lockdown ordered by President Muhammadu Buhari in Lagos, Ogun and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to contain the spread of coronavirus in the country, the Power Generation Companies of Nigeria (GenCos), have pledged to sustain the provision of adequate power in the country during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Daily Nigerian reports that executive secretary, Association of Power Generation Companies, (APGC), Joy Ogaji, made this known in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday, April 1.
