- Virgil Van Dijk has named Lionel Messi as his toughest opponent

- These two players met two times last season in the Champions League

- Van Dijk and his Liverpool teammates are topping the Premier League table

Dutch professional footballer Virgil Van Dijk who plays for Premier League side Liverpool has named Barcelona star Lionel Messi as the toughest opponent he has faced in his career.

No doubt, Lionel Messi is one of the best forwards in the world considering his high sense of scoring goals and even all the titles he has won so far since he joined Barcelona.

Virgil Van Dijk on the other hand is arguably the best defender in the world considering how he has been able to stand tall in Liverpool defence since he joined from Southampton.

Since he joined Liverpool in 2018 from Southampton, he has been superb in which no forward was able to dribble past him until Nicolas Pepe joined Arsenal.

And while speaking with his fans in a question and answer segment on Twitter, Virgil Van Dijk was asked who has been his toughest opponent and he named Lionel Messi.

Last season, Virgil Van Dijk and Lionel Messi met twice in the Champions League in which Liverpool were condemned to a 3-0 defeat in the semifinal first leg at Camp Nou.

But Virgil Van Dijk and his teammates were superb in the second leg beating Barcelona 4-0 in which the Dutchman was able to stop Messi from making dangerous move.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are waiting for the resumption of the Premier League season for them to have the chance of winning the title.

Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how some Premier League clubs have reportedly shown interest for the 2019/20 season to be abandoned because of the threat coronavirus has brought to the world.

And should that be done, then it means Liverpool will not be crowned the Premier League champions despite their efforts so far this season.

Jurgen Klopp and his wards have been topping the Premier League table since the season started and they have only lost one game and drew one winning the remaining ties.

The Reds have also established a 25 points lead on second placed Manchester City who have no chance again to retain their Premier League title.

Liverpool have also been waiting to break the 30 years jinx when they last won the Premier League title, but as it is, they may not be given the diadem.

According to the report by Athletic, many Premier League teams want the entire season to be cancelled and urged the authorities to start plans for another season.
