Six persons feared killed as truck falls on taxi in Lagos

- Six persons have been killed by an articulated truck in Lagos

No fewer than six passengers have lost their lives when a truck with an unknown registration number fell on a fully loaded taxi in Lagos.

Daily Trust reports that the accident happened the day the lockdown of Lagos commenced after Epe long bridge inwards Epe expressway.

Legit.ng gathered that an OPEL car, with registration number SMK-312ES, was carrying seven passengers but six of them died in the accident.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that the accident occurred on the evening of Tuesday, March 31.

The director-general of LASEMA, Olufemi Oke-Osanyitolu, said: “Investigations revealed that a total of seven people were in the crushed car with six of them having lost their lives on or shortly after impact. The lone survivor reportedly trapped beneath the silo truck for hours."

It was learnt that LASEMA’s heavy-duty equipment was deployed by the response team to extricate the single adult man identified as “Lekan” who survived the impact.

The remains of the other six passengers have been transported to the morgue, the agency confirmed.

Oke-Osanyitolu appealed to members of the public to comply with the social distancing guidelines of the state government.

“We also wish to appeal to members of the public to comply with the COVID-19 social distancing guidelines laid down by the governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, to avoid endangering themselves as well as the rescue workers who are already operating under extremely challenging conditions,” Oke-Osanyitolu said.

He added that recovery operation had been concluded, adding that the overturned truck has also been removed from obstructing the road.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that no fewer than 100 residential buildings, school, churches were destroyed by an explosion suspected to be bomb blast in Akure, the Ondo state capital, on the morning of Saturday, March 28.

It was reported that the blast which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, March 28, cut off the ever-busy Akure /Owo road while many people were said to be injured.

According to the report, the incident which happened less than a kilometre to Akure Airport, affected many residents of Eleyowo community, destroying completely a church and a school in the area.

Many people who lived within the church premises were said to be injured while some were rescued by the people of the community.

In another report, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), assured that the government's insensitivity towards health and education as well as its lip service towards good governance would not prevent it from being socially responsible to society.
