In line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s lockdown directive, the inbound and outbound sections of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway have been blocked by the Nigerian police.

According to Channels TV, this move is part of the plans to effectively lock down the Lagos metropolis to curb the spread of the deadly coronavirus.

Recall that Nigeria's leader in his nationwide broadcast ordered that a total lockdown be observed in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Lagos and Ogun states in a bid to combat the pandemic.

He directed the cessation of all movements for an initial period of 14 days with effect from 11 pm on Monday, March 30.

Meanwhile, security operatives have taken to the streets to ensure that the lockdown order is obeyed. The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) on Monday, March 30, revealed that the Nigerian Armed Forces are ready to implement the presidential directive.

Maj.-Gen. John Enenche, the coordinator, Defence Media Operations, during a news conference in Abuja, stated that the military was ready to implement all restrictions on movement in line with President Buhari's directive.

He also said that penalty for those who would flout the restriction would be handled by the police, adding that military personnel had been adequately trained on how to perform their duties.

Femi Adesina, the special adviser to the president, revealed this in a statement, saying that COVID-19 has been declared a dangerous infectious disease.

The presidential spokesman went on to note that the Act is in line with the exercising of the powers conferred on Buhari by the Quarantine Act and all other powers enabling him in that behalf.

In a related development, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Muhammad Musa Bello, has warned that residents who defy the stay at home directive of the federal government will be arrested.

Muhammad gave the warning after an emergency security meeting convened on Monday, March 30, to discuss the modalities of enforcing the lockdown of the FCT for 14 days, The Sun reports.
