Coronavirus: Muhammad Babandede tests positive for COVID-19

- Muhammad Babandede, the comptroller-general of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has contracted the coronavirus

Muhammad Babandede, the comptroller-general of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has tested positive for the coronavirus.

The Guardian newspaper reports that Babandede made the disclosure in a WhatsApp message on Sunday, March 29.

The immigration boss said he had been on self-isolation since his return from the UK on Sunday, March 22.

Today, I tested positive for COVID-19. I have been on self-isolation since my return from UK on Sunday 22nd of this month with British Airways in Lagos,” Babandede said

“I urge my loved ones, Immigration Officers and Nigerians to pray for me and all those affected.”

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed fourteen new cases of coronavirus in the country, taking the total number of infections to 111.

“Fourteen new cases of #COVID19 have been reported in Nigeria; 9 in Lagos and 5 in FCT “As at 09:30 pm 29th March there are 111 confirmed cases of #COVID19 reported in Nigeria with 1 death," the NCDC announced in a tweet.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that President Muhammadu Buhari had stopped all movements in the FCT, Lagos, and Ogun states in a bid to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

The president gave the directive in a presidential broadcast on Sunday evening, March 29, adding that the directive will be for an initial period of 14 days.

The president said that the lockdown will take effect from 11pm on Monday, March 30.

Meanwhile, the governor of Niger state, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, has picked holes in the current method the NCDC is using to determine those to be tested for coronavirus.

The Nation reports that Governor Bello said on Sunday, March 29, that the focus on a particular group of people to be those who are affected by coronavirus is wrong.

He said Nigeria's efforts to contain the spread of the virus may not be fruitful if it continues to overlook the most vulnerable set of people to contact Covid-19 while placing focus on certain statuses and classes.
