Chris Smalling: Arsenal eye £25m move for Man United defender

- Chris Smalling is currently on loan at AS Roma where he has impressed since his arrival last summer

- His performances have now courted interest from Premier League clubs including Arsenal

- Mikel Arteta is understood to be determined to strengthen his backline during the summer transfer window

- The Gunners have had a poor campaign this season, leaving them sitting ninth on the league charts and are in danger of missing out on a Champions League slot

Arsenal have reportedly tabled a £25 million offer to sign Chris Smalling from Man United in the summer.

Smalling is currently on a season-long loan with AS Roma, having been shipped out last summer as he was deemed surplus to requirements.

The centre-back has enjoyed an impressive start to life with the Italian giants, emerging as fans favourite among supporters at the Studio Olimpico.

His spectacular performances have seen the Rome-based club plot a permanent deal for the Englishman at the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

However, the Serie A outfit will now have to contend with competition from Arsenal who are also looking to price Smalling away from Old Trafford.

Metro UK citing sources in Italy report Tottenham, Leicester and Everton are the other Premier League clubs interested in the services of the towering defender.

But it is the Gunners who have shown serious intent to land the former Fulham player, with reports suggesting they already made inquiries over a potential transfer deal.

It is believed the recent outbreak of coronavirus which has peaked in Italy has left Smalling contemplating a return to England.

Meanwhile, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is keen to add reinforcements in defence over the coming months after enduring a tumultuous campaign this season.
