- The Dutchman decided to join Chelsea instead despite visiting the Red Devils training ground
- Robben was however said to have dumped the move over the smell at Man United's training ground
Dutch football legend Arjen Robben was said to have been approached in 2004 but the winger decided to join Premier League rivals Chelsea instead.
The forward spent just three seasons at Stamford Bridge and won league titles, two EFL Cups, one FA Cup and one Community Shield in the process.
According to Rio Ferdinand's testimony, the former Bayern Munich superstar dropped by at the Carrington Training Complex but did not fancy what he saw.
However, his reign with the Blues was cut short due to terrible injury and then join Spanish League side Real Madrid in 2007.
Although he went ahead to win 20 major trophies with Bundesliga side Bayern Munich including one Champions League, eight German League titles among others.
Ferdinand, when asked who was better between Robben and Ryan Giggs, the Englishman did not mince words after choosing the Giggs but further explained why the Dutchman joined Chelsea.
The defender claimed Robben was supposedly put off by the smell at the Red Devils training ground back then.
"I'd have to go for Giggsy, you know," Ferdinand said. "Robben was nasty though, ooh Robben, you knew he was going to come back in on his left foot but the left-back couldn't deal with it.

"He was saying 'I'm going to come in on my left, you're not going to stop me' - and they didn't. What a player, Robben was great.
"We should have signed him at United. I think he came to the training ground, he walked around and didn't like the smell and walked off and went Chelsea.
"Couldn't believe it man. He would have been great for us. "But Giggsy was an unbelievable footballer, left-wing, into center midfield by the end of his career.”
Meanwhile, here's Robben's account of his botched move to Man United as reported by FourFourTwo magazine: "I had a very good conversation with him [Ferguson] over dinner in Manchester and we spoke about football and life,"
"I also went and had a good look around the training ground and everything was good, but after I went back to PSV nothing happened."
