Coronavirus: Kaduna state university shuts down indefinitely amid COVID-19 pandemic

- Kaduna State University (KASU) has been shut down amid the spread of the deadly coronavirus in Nigeria

As part of measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus while the world looks for a cure, the Kaduna State University (KASU) has been shut down indefinitely.

Samuel Manshop, the university registrar, who disclosed the information in an announcement on Friday, March 20, in Kaduna, said that the school's closure was to safeguard the lives of the students and the staff.

He said: “The university community is aware of the growing threat of the coronavirus, which requires swift preventive measures. For this reason, the management of the university has directed that all its students should be informed of the indefinite suspension of academic activities.

“The First Semester Examination earlier scheduled to start on March 23 has also been postponed. All students are advised to vacate the university’s campuses with immediate effect.”

Meanwhile, Muhammad Waziri, the vice president of the students’ union, hailed the proactive measure taken by the institution.

Though Waziri noted that suspension of academic activities would affect the institution's academic calendar, it was, however, a necessary measure amid the spread of the deadly virus.

He said: “It is painful that we will have to remain at home for the time being, but it is for our own good. I am, therefore, appealing to my fellow students to take the development in good faith and protect themselves from being infected by the virus while at home.”

Legit.ng previously reported that students of the University of Ibadan were asked by the institution's management to immediately vacate the campus.

The university’s release signed by its registrar, Olubunmi Faluyi, dated Thursday, March 19, noted that the school will be closed until the spread of the deadly virus is brought under control.

UI also encouraged its staff and students to obey safety measures such as social distancing, use of sanitizers, regular washing of hands to avoid exposure to or contact with the coronavirus.

Similarly, Ondo state government announced the closure of schools and tertiary institutions in the state from Friday, March 20.

The decision became necessary as the whole world is put on lockdown over the virus which is responsible for the death of 10,000 people with thousand of lives on the red line.

Briefing the people of Ondo on Thursday, March 19, Rotimi Akeredolu said all hands are on deck to prevent the outbreak of the life-endangering infection in the state.

In other news, the 24th convocation ceremony of the Lagos State University (LASU) has been cancelled and indefinitely postponed over the growing tension of coronavirus. The decision was taken during an emergency management meeting on Thursday, March 19, following an earlier decision by University of Lagos (UNILAG) to cancel its own event.

Prior to the decision, the management of the university had announced rosters of activities to mark the 24th convocation ceremony where 8,959 graduands will be conferred with honours in diplomas and various degrees programmes.
