Swiss professional club FC Sion have terminated the contracts of nine of their players in which former Arsenal stars Johan Djourou and Alex Song were among those asked to leave.
FC Sion made this decision following the outbreak of deadly coronavirus which has thrown the whole world into serious confusion and tension.
The club feel they should reduce their expenditure since most Leagues in Europe are on break in which they think reducing the number of playing personnel is the panacea.
According to the report on Goal, president of FC Sion contacted all the players on the club's social media group telling them to take a technical unemployment deal.
But the report added that none of the players responded before the announcement was later made of the club sacking nine players.
Cameroonian football star Alex Song and Johan played at Arsenal under former manager Arsene Wenger before they left the Premier League side.
Djourou was superb at the back for Arsenal during his active playing days as he formed a formidable pairing with fellow countryman Philippe Senderos.
Alex Song on the other hand was a good defensive midfielder under Arsene Wenger and made his Champions League debut for Arsenal in their 1-0 win over Real Madrid.
He covered well for former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas in the midfield when they were playing together.
Meanwhile, Swiss Players' Union are said to have protested the dismissal of all these nine players.
