- Comrade Adams Oshiomhole can breathe easily now as attempts to remove him as APC national chairman recently was foiled by his loyalists
- Emerging reports say the APC national chairman was saved by a last-minute intervention by the presidency
- Already, opposing forces are aligning within the ruling party and reconciliation is a priority for the party's leadership
A report by Vanguard has revealed how a last-minute intervention by presidency saved Comrade Adams Oshiomhole from been forced out of office as the All Progressives Congress (APC) national chairman.
According to the report, Oshiomhole was handed a lifeline by the presidency focused on two major events.
First, President Muhammadu Buhari, on the advice of bickering APC governors postponed the NEC meeting indefinitely.
Secondly, the Court of Appeal ordered a stay of execution of Oshiomhole’s suspension.
Thus, on the day he was to have been sacked, Oshiomhole returned to the saddle and superintended a National Working Committee (NWC) meeting.
At the meeting, the usually combative Oshiomhole adorned a peaceful mien, calling on party officials to unite.
He acknowledged his mistakes, sued for peace and extended the olive branch to aggrieved leaders of the party.
To retain his seat, Oshiomhole was handed some conditions to meet while those opposed to him were also handed conditions to fulfil in the overall interest of the party.
An inside source quoted in the report said: ‘’You can see that at the NWC meeting, Oshiomhole toned down his combative posture and made conciliatory moves. That was one of the things he was asked to do.
‘’He was asked to hands-off Edo, stop harassing northern leaders, and stop his high-handedness.’’
Asked if those opposed to Oshiomhole would withdraw the avalanche of litigations, the source added: ‘’The direction of the presidency is where we are going. We will withdraw the cases in court.’’
Another report had indicated that the plot to oust Oshiomhole was foiled by some governors of the party sympathetic to his cause.
It was gathered that APC governors almost exchanged blows at their meeting in Abuja, which preceded their meeting with President Buhari.
The meeting was for the APC governors to arrive at a position on Oshiomhole before proceeding to the Villa to meet with Buhari.
Tempers flared at the meeting when Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi, who also doubles as chairman of the APC governors, came up with a post-meeting communiqué, which endorsed Oshiomhole’s ouster.
However, troubled started, when Imo state governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, challenged Bagudu on how the stand was arrived at.
“He was supported by his colleagues from Borno, Ogun and Gombe states; Babagana Zulum, Dapo Abiodun and Inuwa Yahaya,” a source said.
The pro-Oshiomhole governors went on to threaten to move against Bagudu as chairman of APC governors.
