Coronavirus: Ban large gatherings - Senate tells Buhari over spread of disease

- Nigerian Senate has sent a powerful message to President Muhammadu Buhari over coronavirus

- The upper legislative chamber asked the president to ban all large gatherings in Nigeria

- Senate also advised the federal government to keep Nigerians abreast of all measure related to coronavirus worldwide

Following the discovery of five new cases of deadly coronavirus in Nigeria, the Senate has waded in and told President Muhammadu Buhari to take more precautionary measures against the spread of the disease in the country.

Legit.ng reports that the upper legislative chamber made the request on Wednesday, March 18, during its plenary session at the National Assembly.

These are the list of the request made by the Senate to President Buhari:

1. Travel bans

2. Restrictions on large gatherings

3. Tighter border controls

4. Stringent checking of people coming into Nigeria

5. Mandatory 14-day quarantine

6. The federal government should keep Nigerians abreast of all measure related to coronavirus worldwide.

7. The federal government to open testing centres in each state of the federation

8. The federal government should stop airlines coming in from countries known to have been affected with the coronavirus.

9. The government should urge corporate organizations, including schools, offices, restaurants, mosques, churches and homes to make regular hand washing mandatory.

10. The federal government should shut down all international airports except Abuja and Lagos to ensure proper check of citizens coming in.

11. The federal, state and local government in charge of the department of public health to ensure all public health requirements and hygiene be properly monitored in accordance with the health enactment of state and local government.

13. The federal government should ensure and immediately constitute a meeting of the national council of health to harmonize their responses and advocacy to Covid-19.

14. The government to enforce the quarantine of Nigerian citizens coming from countries that have been declared high risk.

15. The federal government should set up a special intervention fund for the purpose of tackling this coronavirus.

The Senate president, Ahmad Lawan, described coronavirus as the most important issue that every part of the world is concerned with, adding the federal government should not rest its orse, and marshal all available resources to protect the citizens.

He said: “We need to be very careful, this is something that is entirely new to the world. We should work with the executive to ensure that we provide those facilities, particularly the testing centres. We need to have testing centres at least in each geographical zone.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that All Progressive Congress (APC) said it would meet the minister of health, Osagie Ehanire, over the situation of coronavirus in Nigeria after another case was recorded on Tuesday, March 17.
