In an ambush organised by members of the Boko Haram terrorist group on Sunday, March 15, not less than six Nigerian soldiers were killed in Borno.
According to Premium Times, the deceased soldiers who were of the 151 Task Force battalion, included two sergeants, two lance corporals and two privates.
Confirming the sad incident, a Nigerian Army official who spoke on condition of anonymity said: “We lost six soldiers to Boko Haram terrorists this morning. The guys came unexpectedly with sophisticated weapons.”
However, the spokesman of the force, Sagir Musa, told journalists that he had no knowledge of the development when asked about it.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that many Boko Haram fighters were killed after fighter jets of the Nigerian Air Force began heavy bombardment in the heart of the Sambisa forest.
The airstrikes which were targeted at the “S” region, also destroyed the terrorists’ facilities including vehicles and motorcycles hidden under dense vegetation.
This heavy blow against the insurgents is in line with the directive from President Muhammadu Buhari to take the fight against terrorism to the insurgents.
Air Commodore Ibukunle Daramola, the NAF's director of public relations and information, who revealed this information in a statement said the airstrikes were carried out on Thursday, February 27, in the state.
Daramola also noted that airstrikes were in continuation of Operation Rattle Snake 3 after intelligence surveillance showed that insurgents had intensified activities in the area.
He said: “The Air Task Force (ATF), Operation LAFIYA DOLE has neutralized some Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) and destroyed some of their facilities in air strikes conducted on 27 February 2020 at a location referred to as the “S” Region in the heart of the Sambisa Forest, Borno state.
“The airstrikes were executed in continuation of Operation Rattle Snake 3 after series of Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions showed that the BHTs; with their vehicles, motorcycles and logistics facilities camouflaged under the dense forest vegetation; had intensified activities in the “S” Region with a view to launching further attacks on civilian settlements and troops’ locations in the area."
