Niger Delta deserves more than 13% derivation, says Gov Okowa
- Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has called on the federal government to release outstanding 13% derivation fund to Niger Delta states

Delta state governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, on Thursday, March 12 said oil-producing states deserved more than 13 per cent derivation from the federation account.
He made this known in Asaba when members of the post mortem sub-committee of the Federal Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) led by Mr Kabir Mashi visited him.
The governor also demanded the release of the money already accruing to the states under the derivation principles.
He decried the lack of adequate implementation of the 13 per cent derivation policy, stating that it was constitutional for the federal government to remit what was due for the states to them.

He noted that the Excess Crude Account is for the interest of the nation but insisted that, for any withdrawal from the account, the constitutional principle of deducting the 13 per cent and send it back to those it belongs to.
Recently, elders in Akwa Ibom state under the aegis of Akwa Ibom Leaders Vanguard, have asked the National Assembly to rise to its constitutional oversight and check excesses of the federal executive arm of government.
In a statement sent to journalists on Friday, February 28, the elders expressed concern over the persistent depletion of Nigeria's reserves.
They questioned what they called “barefaced unbudgeted emergency expenditures” which they said is fast eating a hole in the nation's economy.
“Let it be known that the resources as generated mainly from the hydrocarbon deposits in the Niger Delta region has been dubiously channelled into the wasteful prospecting of oil in the Chad Basin and recent day and night construction of a petrochemical refinery in Daura, Katsina state,” the elders stated.
Meanwhile, Imo state governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma says his government has saved about N800million within the last two months of his assumption of office.
Governor Uzodinma said the move is in a bid to stop continuous misappropriation and embezzlement of funds in the Imo state Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (ISOPADEC).
The governor disclosed this at the palace of the traditional ruler of Mmahu community in Ohaji Egbema while meeting with stakeholders in oil-rich Ohaji Egbema local government area of Imo state.
