Vocal activist apologises for calling Michelle Obama ugly

- Phillip Agnew announced to be part of Bernie Sanders's campaign on March 7

- Netizens decided to dig up his old tweets that branded Michelle Obama as ugly and not so pretty

- Phillip apologised for his remarks and said he was young and immature at that time

- According to him, he grew up believing in false beauty standards that drove him to disrespect women

A vocal civil rights activist and Bernie Sanders’ new campaign adviser Phillip Agnew has issued an apology for once referring to former US first lady as ugly.

Through a few tweets posted back in 2009, Phillip insulted Michelle Obama and described her as an odd-looking woman.

“Michelle Obama is an odd looking woman. I would call her ugly but I do not want the backlash,” his past tweet said.

When the activist announced his decision to join Sanders’s team on March 7, internet users immediately scoured through the internet to revive his reproachful remarks about the mother of two.

Phillip was cornered and forced to release a statement showing his remorse for his past, distasteful behavior.

According to the political enthusiast, he is now a changed man and should not be judged based on the tweets he wrote in the past.

He acknowledged that words have the power to make or break a person’s character and added he has spent years speaking life and love into his community.

“I am not my tweets from 2009. Still, words have power to heal and to harm and I acknowledge and apologize for when my words harm. I have spent years speaking life and love into my community but I was wrong and I have to be accountable,” Phillip said in a tweet.

In 2009, the activist had also said he did not think Michelle was anything close to pretty even after looking at her from every angle possible.

The co-founder of Dream Defenders said at 23, he was a wild child thanks to his rough upbringing.

Apparently, at that time, he was young, immature and insecure therefore pushing him to be a sexist and cruel boy.

Phillip said he grew up being accustomed to the wrong standards of beauty and success.

“As a young community organizer, I have spent hours and days, months and years doing, thinking and being better, privately and publicly,” the activist added.

While her husband was still in office, Michelle had to shut out numerous critics who referred to her as unattractive while others claimed she was a man in a dress.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that a video of Michelle Obama receiving a steamy dance from a male dancer went viral on social media.

The former first lady was in Las Vegas, US, attending a Christina Aguilera show dubbed The Experience.
