Amotekun: EKiti state govt says Fayemi will sign security bill into law next week

Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti state would sign the Security Network Agency and Amotekun Corps bill into law next week, Muyiwa Olumilua, the state commissioner for information has disclosed.

Olumilua disclosed that the Amotekun bill remains a top priority of the Fayemi-led administration, noting that the bill would be committed for executive assent for effective implementation, The Nation reports.

The bill is going to be signed next week. I can’t give you a specific date, but all I know is it will be signed into law early next week," he said.

The Ekiti House of Assembly had passed the Amotekun bill into law on February 14 after the bill scaled first and second readings as well as public hearing.

Meanwhile, following the passage of a bill to legalise the Operation Amotekun by the Ekiti state House of Assembly, the Ogun state House of Assembly on Tuesday, March 3, also passed its bill on the new security outfit.

The Nation reports that the majority leader of the House, Yusuf Sherif, had presented the report of the committee on security and strategy during plenary in Abeokuta.

Legit.ng gathered that the majority leader stated that the committee recommended that the bill be passed as approved by the conference of speakers of the southwest legislature.

The majority leader moved the motion for the adoption of the report and it was seconded by Musefiu Lamidi, who is a member of the House.

The clerk of the House, Deji Adeyemo, read the bill for the third time while the speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, ordered that a clean copy of the bill be forwarded to Governor Dapo Abiodun for his assent.

In another news report, Mudashiru Obasa, the speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly, has declared that there is no going back on the Amotekun bill in the state.

The speaker made this declaration on Monday, February 24, at a public hearing on a bill to establish the security outfit in Lagos.

At the time of filing this report, the public hearing had in attendance notable politicians, traditional rulers, Iba Gani Adams, Aare Onakakanfo of Yoruba land.

He said some cattle breeders had lived in the state for over 40 years and could contribute to the success of Operation Amotekun since they know the terrains.

Bello also stated that having Fulani among the outfit will make it easier for Amotekun men to distinguish between genuine herdsmen and the criminals while on patrol.
