Amotekun: Seyi Makinde of Oyo signs state security bill into law

Amotekun: Seyi Makinde of Oyo signs state security bill into law

- Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state has assented the Operation Amotekun bill into law

- The governor received the bill from the speaker of Oyo state assembly Debo Ogundoyin and his colleagues on Tuesday

- Makinde promised that the Amotekun security network will consolidate the efforts of the national security operatives in the state

Oyo state governor Seyi Makinde, on Tuesday, March 10, signed the State Security Network Agency bill codenamed Operation Amotekun into law.

The governor broke the news through a statement on his verified Twitter handle on Tuesday afternoon, becoming the first governor after Rotimi Makinde of Ondo state to assent the bill.

"This morning, I signed the State Security Network Agency (Àmọ̀tẹ́kùn) bill, 2020 into law. It’s been a long & torturous journey which started as far back as July 2019.

"Today, history has been made as Oyo state joins other southwest states to have the Àmọ̀tẹ́kùn law in force," Makinde said.

Governor Makinde, who dressed in Amotekun regalia alongside the speaker and other members of Oyo assembly, said the creation of the state security will consolidate the efforts of police and other security operatives in Oyo.

The Oyo governor cleared the air that the security network is not the replacement for the local security agencies.

"I stated that the Àmọ̀tẹ́kùn Corps is not a replacement for our traditional security agencies.

"It is to complement the efforts of the federal security agencies who are stretched to the limit as a result of pockets of insecurity all over Nigeria," Makinde further stressed.

The governor thanked the state traditional security agencies and promised that the Amotekun operation will fill all the security potholes in the state.
