- The lawmaker made the disclosure during a public hearing on oil theft on Tuesday
- Gbajabiamila said the theft has been resulting to huge financial loss for Nigeria
Nigeria daily loses 400,000 barrels of crude oil to theft, House of Representatives speaker Femi Gbajabiamila has revealed.
Speaking on Tuesday, March 10, during a public hearing on oil theft, the lawmaker said the loss has been responsible for massive infrastructural decay on Nigeria's health system and education.
According to The Nation, the lawmaker raised an eyebrow against the theft which he said is annually resulting in a financial loss for the country.
Gbajabiamila, however, assured that the current administration will go hard on those who have been indulging in the illegal theft, adding that there is an existing investigation on the development.
Also corroborating the claims made by the speaker, chairman of the Adhoc Committee and deputy leader of the House, Peter Akpatason, attributed lack of commitment from the stakeholders to the setback slowing down the investigation.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that Gbajabiamila dismissed media reports accusing him of diverting the public funds to sponsor 300 guests to Dubai for his mother Alhaja Lateefat Olufunke Gbajabiamila's 90th birthday.
The lawmaker refuted the claim in a press statement released on Tuesday, March 3, by his special adviser on media and publicity Lanre Lasisi.
An online publication Sahara Reporters had claimed that Gbajabiamila organised a massive birthday bash for his mother in the United Arab Emirates which was attended by the creme-la-creme of the society.
