Israel Adesanya retained his UFC middleweight title in his first defence of the belt to Yoel Romero in Las Vegas.

The Nigerian-born New Zealand fighter was taken through the distance but all three judges scored the fight in his favour after five rounds.

But the most fulfilling part of the deal was going home with $500,000 which was the highest amount earned at the UFC 248 pay-per-view event.

Romero also pocketed $350,000 despite losing to the champion on points making him the second most paid mixed martial artist.

Strawweight champion Zhang Weili went home with an appearance fee of $100,000 and a winning bonus of $100,00 after defeating Joanna Jedrzejczyk who earned $106,000.

Here are the amounts fighters earned on the main card at UFC 248.

Israel Adesanya (c): $500,000 (no win bonus), Yoel Romero: $350,000 (no win bonus).

Weili Zhang (c): $100,000 to show ($100,000 to win), Joanna Jedrzejczyk: $106,000 to show ($106,000 to win).

Beneil Dariush $70,000 to show ($70,000 to win), Drakkar Klose: $40,000 to show ($40,000 to win).

Neil Magny: $76,000 to show ($76,000 to win), Li Jingliang: $64,000 to show ($64,000 to win).

Alex Oliveira: $64,000 to show ($64,000 to win), Max Griffin: $35,000 to show ($35,000 to win).

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that Chieme Martins has reportedly passed away during a Nigeria Professional League (NPFL) match between Nasarawa United and Katsina United, cited on Twitter.

An unconfirmed report stated that the player had no collision with anybody before the incident occurred away at the home ground of Nasarawa United.

After the incident, there was a lengthy check on the player after collapsing on the pitch while the game was still at 0-0.
