Naby Keita: Liverpool star's cousin among 27 people involved in bus crash

- Naby Keita’s cousin Almamy Keita was among the 27 people who were involved in a car crash that killed eight footballers

- The accident was reportedly caused by brake failure

- The bus, which was ferrying players to their first game of the season, crashed into a tree

Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita is in mourning following the death of people involved in a bus accident on Thursday, March 5.

A team bus carrying 27 people from club Étoile de Guinée was headed for the team’s first game of the season when it was involved in the fatal accident in Keita’s native Guinea.

A further 19 people were seriously injured in the accident which took place about 250km east of Guinea’s capital Conakry.

It has now been gathered that Keita's cousin Almamy Keita was on board the bus but he survived the accident.

Taking to his Instagram, Keita expressed his shock at the incident as he wished families of the victims well.

"I am shocked, sad and heartbroken at this terrible news. My sincere condolences to the #etoiledeguinee team and to Guinean football, may their souls rest in peace,” he expressed.

A statement from the Ligue Guineenne de Football Professionnel has since been issued on the accident.

The club’s manager has since confirmed the accident was largely due to brake failure.

"There were three corners; the driver somehow managed to negotiate the first two, but there was nothing he could do about the third. He lost control of the vehicle and it crashed into a tree." manager d’Abdourahmane Condé said as quoted by

Sadly, this is the second accident involving a football team in Guinea to occur this year.

In January, a bus carrying first-division side Wakriya AC crashed straight into a stationary bus, killing three people.

Earlier, reported that no fewer than eight Etoile de Guinee football stars have been reportedly confirmed dead in the auto crash which occurred on Thursday, March 5.

The Guinean division two outfit was said to be travelling to honour their first league game of the season before the unfortunate incident took place.

Additional reports claim that another 19 other passengers in the same luxurious bus sustained injuries en route Kankan - 400km east of Mamou.
