Benue lawmaker introduces bill to raise academic qualification for president

- A bill seeking to raise the academic qualification for election into the office of the president has been introduced in the House of Representatives

A bill seeking to raise the academic qualification for election into the office of the president has been introduced in the House of Representatives by Benjamin Mzondu, a lawmaker from Benue state.

Mzondu told The Cable on Friday, March 6, that the proposed legislation seeks to provide a post-secondary school qualification for the office of the president and that of a governor.

The bill reportedly passed the first reading at the house’ plenary session on Thursday, March 5.

The lawmaker said the constitution stipulates that a person may be qualified for election into the office of the president if they have been educated up to at least school certificate level or its equivalent.

He explained that he is proposing the bill to ensure that a presidential aspirant should have at least a diploma after secondary education.

Mzondu added that in the absence of academic qualifications, the requirement for a presidential candidate could be a post-secondary school experience of at least 20 years of working in the public sector.

In another news, the immediate past representative of Kaduna Central at the Senate, Shehu Sani, has pleaded with Governor Abdullahi Ganduje to thread softly in his dealing with the Emir of Kano, Mallam Muhammadu Sanusi ll.

Legit.ng reports that the former lawmaker asked the governor to forgive Emir Sanusi of any wrongdoing.
