Obasanjo at 83: Jonathan sends birthday message to ex-president

A former president of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has sent a goodwill message to one of his predecessors, Olusegun Obasanjo, as he celebrates his 83rd birthday on Thursday, March 5.

On his official Facebook page, Jonathan referred to Obasanjo as a leader who built bridges of love and unity throughout the country.

Moreover, Jonathan said that the former head of state is an elder statesman whose service in office was born out of sincere love for his nation.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that President Muhammadu Buhari had sent warm greetings to Obasanjo on the occasion of his 83rd birthday celebration.

Legit.ng gathered that the president through one of his aides, Femi Adesina, congratulated Obasanjo for a life of courage, dedication and service to Nigeria, Africa, and humanity in general.

In a similar post, Legit.ng reported that some former African heads of states would be at the Olusegun Obasanjo presidential library international conference centre in Abeokuta, Ogun state, for the 83rd birthday of Obasanjo.

A series of activities had been organized by the Centre for Human Security and Dialogue (CHSD), including keynote addresses by leaders in the continent.

At a press conference to announce the events preceding the day of the celebration, Professor Peter Okebukola, the director of CHSD also announced that there would be a presentation of the book ‘The Asian Aspiration’ which was authored by Greg Mills, Obasanjo, and others.

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, a former Liberian president; Ernest Bai Koroma, the former Sierra Leonean leader and Hailemariam Desalegn, a former Ethiopian prime minister were the former African leaders expected to grace the occasion.

Professor Okebukola said: “The roundtable will bring together former Heads of State and government in Africa, especially from the ECOWAS sub-region, heads/representatives of United Nations agencies, Ambassadors of foreign missions to Nigeria, leaders from the public and private sector, the media, development experts, and other stakeholders.

“Ambassador of China to Nigeria and the Head of Chancery of the High Commission of India to Nigeria will give perspectives of their countries on the Asian aspiration and lessons for Africa.”
