2023: APC chieftain backs El-Rufai on southern presidency

- A Niger APC chieftain, Jonathan Vatsa, has said Governor El-Rufai should be commended for supporting the south for the 2023 presidency

- Vatsa said giving the presidency to the south is the only way to avoid violence and political instability in 2023

- The APC chieftain also praised the opposition PDP for introducing the rotational presidency, saying that party means well for Nigeria

A chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger state, Jonathan Vatsa, has backed Governor Nasir El-Rufai's support for the south to take over the presidency in 2023.

The APC chieftain noted that 2023 southern presidency is the only thing that would guarantee peace and corporate existence of Nigeria as a country, The Sun reports.

Vatsa said Governor El-Rufai deserves commendation for declaring his support for the southern presidency.

“People like us have said this before but some selfish politicians thought that our voice does not count, now that people like El-Rufai has seen wisdom in it and has come out to declare his support for power shift to the south. I think we should commend him," he said.

The APC chieftain added that the presidency should be given to the southeast to avoid political instability.

Vatsa also called on northern politicians to stop thinking that leadership is their birthright just as he wondered what impact the leadership in the north has had on the ordinary man on the street.

He said the northern youths attacking Governor El-Rufai for supporting the southern presidency are the victims of the leadership crisis in the zone.

“Today the north has the greatest number of unemployed youths in the country yet power is in the north and these do not know that the power in the north does not impact on them in anyway," he said.

The APC chieftain praised the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for introducing the rotational presidency, saying that party means well for Nigeria.

“I think PDP meant well for the country. They did it in good faith so that there should be equity, Transparency and Fairness," he said.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Governor El-Rufai said that at the end of President Muhammadu Buhari's administration in 2023, power should be zoned to the south.

He said that it is a natural and general understanding in the APC as well as in Nigeria that power should be rotated between the northern and southern parts of the country.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that a former governor of Zamfara state, Senator Ahmed Sani Yerima, had declared that President Buhari would not endorse the presidential ambition of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2023.

Yerima, a two-term senator made the statement recently. He said rumours making the rounds that the president and the APC national leader were in agreement on this were inconsequential.
