The commissioner for health in Lagos state, Professor Akin Abayomi, has visited the Italian national who is the only confirmed case of the coronavirus in Lagos.

The infected man is currently isolated at the Mainland Infectious Disease hospital in Yaba.

The Lagos health commissioner also inspected other wards of the hospital currently under renovation. He confirmed the work will be completed very soon.

How Nigerians react to the commissioner's visitation

Some Nigerians expressed reservations with the way the health commissioner appeared at the isolation centre without protection.

Obinna Okereke said: "The commissioner should be quarantined too for coming too close without protection."

Michael Edafe Igbe commented: "These two men ought to protect themselves with safety gears. The disease doesn't know whether you are a commissioner or not! Pls be guided!!"

"You don't visit a coronavirus victim without covering your body it's a pity and a shame he's d health commissioner," Kola Sharafa also said.

Abbas Nasiru said: "And how come the so called commissioner is not wearing face mask, gloves or other protective wears?"

"Visiting the man without proper kits? This country is a mess," Ackor Toryila said on Instagram.

Tony Silva Oshos also said: "I think this is a joke for this commissioner not to wear mask."

"Why is the minister not wearing a mask for heavens sake ..he should know better," Nonso also commented on Instagram.

Some also attacked the health commissioner for disclosing that some parts of the hospital used as the isolation centre were still under renovation after the Nigerian government had claimed it was fully prepared to contain the disease.

David Pam Chuwang said: "Did u remember that China built hospital in ten days while Nigeria can't renovate hospital in several months. What a mess."

Daniel Cutty questioned: "Under renovation? And they released millions since in case of this emergency?"

Legit.ng notes that there are also several reactions on the personal Twitter page of the health commissioner where he first shared the photos.

Adetoro Adetunji asked the commissioner to release the photo of the infected Italian for people who have come in contact with him to present themselves for quarantine.

He said: "Sir, in as much as it is fair to shield the identity of the Italian, however, we are in an emergency, hence, his picture should be released, so that those that were in contact with him can report voluntarily. He might have stopped for any activity while moving from Ogun to Lagos."

Some also commended the commissioner for his efforts so far.

"You have done really well today or should I say yesterday. Going through your resume again shows Lagos is truly in safe hands under your leadership on this and I dare say your entire career has sure prepared you for this moment.

"A grateful citizen says thanks for a job well done," Iyayi, Era Abraham tweeted.

Meanwhile, there was a mild drama at the Lagos isolation centre, as the 44-year-old Italian man infected with the virus attempted to run away from the centre.

The man was allegedly disappointed at the ill-equipped facility and alleged poor treatment he is being given.

The Italian also reportedly complained of not being fed well and not receiving proper medical attention, all of which culminated in his decision to abscond from the centre.

The health commissioner, however, dismissed the claims that the isolation centre is generally unkempt.
