Former Ajax and AC Milan striker Marco van Basten has picked Barcelona man Lionel Messi as the best player on earth ahead of his biggest rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

In fact, the 55-year-old Dutchman stated clearly that those who are rating Cristiano Ronaldo above Lionel Messi know nothing about the game of football.

Lionel Messi and Ronaldo have both been involved in serious rivalry for the past ten years in which these two players have shared 11 Ballon d'Or awards between themselves.

Cristiano Ronaldo started his playing career in Portugal before moving to Premier League side Manchester United from where he joined Real Madrid.

"Cristiano is a great player, but those who say he is better than Messi know nothing about football, he told Corriere dello Sport.

It was actually at the Spanish La Liga that the rivalry between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi began in which all fans will want to watch the tie between Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Lionel Messi on the other hand began his football career at Barcelona academy before moving to the main team years back.

And since the Argentine got to the first team at Barcelona, he has been impressive and remains the club's highest goalscorer ever in history.

Lionel Messi has won six Ballon D'Or awards at Barcelona, while Cristiano Ronaldo has lifted five so far in his career.

But one thing is still missing in the cabinets of these two players and that is the FIFA World Cup title which they have never won.

They both tried to succeed at the FIFA World Cup in Russia last two years, but Messi and Ronaldo were unable to take their nations far.
