Coronavirus: Lagos state begins identification process

- Curbing the spread of coronavirus is now a tough battle for the Lagos state government

- To gain victory in the fight, the government has set up a means of identifying all who had contact with the Italian who has the first case of the disease in Nigeria

- The health commissioner in the state, Akin Abayomi, said that whoever is discovered to have had contact with the man will be quarantined immediately

As one of its measures to curb the spread of coronavirus in Lagos, the state government has kicked off an identification process so as to ascertain all who had contact with the infected Italian man.

According to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in a press briefing, those who will be discovered as contacts of the man in the state will be immediately quarantined.

Confirming this, the state's commissioner for health, Akin Abayomi, said that the process started in the afternoon of Friday, February 28, Premium Times reports.

Abayomi said: "We will like to assure everybody that we are on this case to make sure that we can identify everyone he has come in contact with.”

The commissioner added that the ministry of health in the state has activated a mechanism that will track the movement of the Italian right from the Murtala Mohammed International Airport to Ogun state.

He went on to say that the state government is trying to break the current of the possible spread of the virus by identifying all who had contact with the man and isolating them.

Abayomi also pointed out: “If he has respiratory symptoms, it is likely to be more contagious than it is at the moment.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that less than one day after an Italian national was detected to have symptoms of coronavirus in Ogun, officials of a cement factory he visited had discovered those who had physical contact with him.

Informing the public about the discovery, the spokesperson of the firm, Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, said that although the identities of the persons in question cannot be revealed, they had been quarantined and were examined.

Medebem also revealed that all protocols of isolation and disinfection were implemented immediately.

Expressing gratitude to the federal ministry of health, the governments of Lagos and Ogun for their synergy and timely response to the incident, she disclosed that the company is collaborating with International SOS, a global health organisation, to frontally address the issue.
