Fire destroys games village in Abia state

- A fire outbreak has destroyed buildings in a popular games village in Abia state

- The infernor was reprted to have started around 11:00am on Tuesday, February 25

- The fire destroyed a lot of properties in the complex, even if officials of the state's fire service came at the scene by 3:00pm

A famous games village situated at Nsulu in Isiala Ngwa North local government area of Abia state was on Tuesday, February 25, gutted by fire.

The Nation reports that the inferno, which razed down a lot of buildings within the complex, started by late morning of Tuesday.

However, the online newspapers gathered that operatives of the state's fire service arrived at the scene by 3:00 pm.

Although there has been no report as to any casualties caused by the disaster, it was confirmed that properties worth millions of naira were damaged in the fire.

In reaction to the disastrous development, John Okiyi Kalu, the commissioner for information, said that the state government has banned all forms of bush burning as a way of preventing occurrences that will endanger the lives of people.

Kalu said: “Following the recent fire outbreak at Nsulu Games Village in Isiala Ngwa North LGA and other areas of the state as recently recorded, the Abia state governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, has directed a total ban on bush burning in the state with immediate effect."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the capital of Ogun state, Abeokuta, witnessed pandemonium on the night of Wednesday, February 12, as fire erupted in the house of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The house which is located at Ita-Eko area of Abeokuta was gutted by fire about 9.30pm. Legit.ng gathered that the fire incident was allegedly caused by a power surge.

Residents of the area reportedly joined the former president's domestic workers to help in putting out the fire in an exercise which lasts for almost an hour.

Fatai Adefala, Ogun state's director of fire service, confirmed the incident. He, however, said that the main building in the former president’s compound was not affected, noting that the fire only affected a store.

Adefala said fire service operatives helped in putting out the fire following the distress call they received in the late hours of Wednesday.

In a similar development, a raging bush fire destroyed a part of the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo state.
