Police vans burnt in Jigawa as residents revenge killing of 1 person by operatives

It was a case of policing gone wrong in Jigawa on Friday, February 21, as operatives who were chasing an escaping driver ended up killing a woman and injuring four others.

The incident led angry residents of Malammadori local government area of the state where it happened to take on police vehicles in reprisals.

They burnt two vehicles belonging to the law enforcement agency, Daily Nigerian reports.

The incident was also confirmed by the spokesperson of the police command in Jigawa, Abdu Jinjiri.

The report quoted the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) as saying that the police spokesperson explained that the policemen were chasing a car, whose driver was trying to escape from them when the incident happened.

According to him, the policemen, two of them, suspected the vehicle and decided to chase it using a van.

Unfortunately, the police van hit the escaping vehicle from the rear with the effect being the death of the woman and the injuring of about four people.

Jinjiri said: “The policemen on duty chased the suspected car and rammed it from the rear after the driver tried to escape.

“In the ensuing commotion, the girl was hit and killed, while four others were injured.

“Unfortunately, irate youths in the area took advantage of the situation and set ablaze the two vehicles at the scene.”

He said the policemen involved were currently in detention and investigation on the incident was ongoing.

The report also quoted one Hamza Bello, who witnessed the incident, as saying at least eight people sustained injuries in the incident.

“At about 8. 00 p.m. last night, a police patrol vehicle engaged a Golf car on a high speed chase from Hadejia Road up to UBA.

“The car, which carried bags of maize and pepper, summersaulted near Malammadori Motor Park, injuring five persons that boarded it and three motorcyclists by the road side,” he said.
