Lassa fever: No vaccines for diseases in Nigeria yet - FG

- The Nigerian government is still working on a vaccine for Lassa fever

- This was revealed by the minister of state for health, Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora

- However, the minister said that the World Health Organisation (WHO) is currently at work to come up with a cure for the disease in the country

According to the minister of state for health, Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora, the federal government has no vaccine for Lassa fever outbreak in Nigeria.

Mamora disclosed this on Friday, February 21, in Abuja as he gave updates on the country's preparedness for coronavirus, Daily Trust reports.

However, the minister said that the World Health Organisation (WHO) in conjunction with other international health agencies is working on a vaccine to tackle the disease.

Moreover, he revealed that the hard work from related bodies on the issue is attested to by the decline of deaths from the outbreak.

Mamora said that for now, the best preventive measure for the disease is the elimination of rodent and utmost hygiene, especially in residential areas.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Lagos state had recorded its first case of Lassa fever since the outbreak of the disease in the country.

Lassa fever, a hemorrhagic fever, caused by the Lassa virus, was raging in over 19 states in the country.

The Lagos state commissioner for health Professor Akin Abayomi, in a statement sent to journalists on Wednesday, February 19 confirmed that the patient is currently in isolation at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.

He called on residents to be calm and not panic, noting that the situation is under control while assuring that the state government, in collaboration with federal authorities, would do everything possible to control the spread of the disease in the state.

He stressed the need for members of the public to ensure and maintain adequate personal hygiene and environmental sanitation at all times as part of prevention and control measures against the spread of the disease in the state.

Earlier in 2020, the Lagos state government trained 342 medical personnel as first-level emergency responders for communicable diseases in the 20 local governments and 37 local council development areas of the state.

This was disclosed by the director-general, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Femi Oke-Osanyintolu.
