Unknown gunmen kill 2 police officers, injure another at Ondo checkpoint

- Unknown gunmen have killed two police officers and left another injured in Ondo state

The death of two police officers who were killed by some unknown gunmen has been confirmed by the Nigerian Police Force, Ondo state command.

According to The Nation, the policemen on Monday, February 17, were attacked by the bandits at a checkpoint along Ode Irele-Ajagba Road in Irele local government area of the state. Two officers were killed while one was injured after the suspects opened fire on them.

The officer who sustained injuries was immediately rushed to a hospital where he has been receiving treatment. However, CSP Femi Joseph, the police spokesman who confirmed the incident, in a statement, did not reveal the names of the policemen that were killed.

Joseph noted that a search has been launched to find the suspects. He said: “We lost two of our men on duty on Monday, but we don’t know who the killers are yet, whether they are armed robbers or militants or some thugs, it is when we arrest them that they tell us who they are.

“But it is very sad and unfortunately for the command, losing our men just like that. While the investigation has commenced, we will do everything to get the bandits arrested and face the wrath of the law.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that heavily armed men on Friday, February 14, kidnapped a priest of the Uromi Catholic Arch Diocese, Rev Father Nicholas Oboh, in Benin the Edo state capital.

Chancellor Uromi Diocese, Rev Father Osi Odenore, revealed this in a statement he posted on his Facebook page. “We are sure he is alive, and since the incident, steps have been taken to ensure that Rev Father Nicholas Oboh is released without no harm,” he wrote.

In a related development, gunmen kidnapped 10 travellers from Ondo state going to Abuja along Obajana-Abuja highway in Obajana, Kogi state.

A source speaking to a news publication noted that the owner of the commercial bus, Abdulganiyu Hakeem, said the bandits who abducted the passengers and driver stopped the vehicle after it took off from Akoko.
