The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has filed for bankruptcy protection in the face of mounting lawsuits filed against it over allegations of sexual abuse.

NBC News reports that the organisation filed for bankruptcy on Tuesday, February 18, to shield itself from mounting legal costs.

According to a spokesman of the organisation whose name was not mentioned, the bankruptcy protection was filed with two major objectives.

The first is to ensure that all the victims of sexual abuse are adequately compensated while the second objective is to ensure the continued existence of the organisation.

Legit.ng gathers that it is only the national body of the Boy Scouts that filed for bankruptcy as other local chapters are financially independent.

BSA's president, Roger Mosby, said the organisation is deeply sorry for the development just as he apologised to all the abuse victims.

The organisation further gave the assurance that it is now safer, noting that the majority of the abuse claims happened over 30 years ago.
