Insecurity: Federal lawmakers urge Buhari to sack service chiefs

Some lawmakers in the House of Representatives have asked President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately sack the service chiefs over the rising insecurity in Nigeria.

The lawmakers under the auspices of the Young Parliamentarians Forum (YPF) of the House of Representatives, on Sunday, February 16, in Owerri, Imo state raised concerns over the security situation in the country, Daily Trust reports.

The in a communiqué issued at the end of its 2020 annual retreat, the forum warned that Nigeria’s cohesion and national development was being threatened by the security situation in the country.

The legislators said they were in support of the resolution of the National Assembly calling for the immediate removal of the service chiefs.

Meanwhile, a coalition has called on Nigerians to support the country's service chiefs in the fight against terrorism amidst conspiracy by disgruntled politicians.

The Coalition for Democracy and Development at a press conference in Abuja on Sunday, February 16, said there is a plot by some politicians and groups to disintegrate Nigeria through sponsorship of acts of terrorism across the northeast region.

The coalition's director enlightenment, Grace Ojukwu, said the successes gained by the military in the fight against terrorism since the advent of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Ojukwu said there is a grand plot by some politicians and sponsors of the Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorist group to mobilize over 2000 youths to stage a protest against the service chiefs in the country on Monday, February 17.

In another report, Nigeria's foremost human rights activist and lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), on Sunday, February 16, said the presidency has no power to stop Nigerians from protesting peacefully over the call for the removal of all service chiefs following the increase of insecurity. Falana stated this in reaction to a statement credited to President Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu.

The senior special assistant to on media and publicity had noted that there’s a plot by a political class to move against all Nigerian service chiefs.

Nonetheless, the human rights activist warned the police against harassing an aggrieved Nigerian, Channels TV reports. He said: “The authorities of the Nigeria Police Force are urged not to harass aggrieved Nigerians for protesting against perceived injustice in the country.
