- Timipre Sylva, the minister of state for petroleum says the APC legal team will explore all options available to the party to restore its mandate in Bayelsa state
- The minister urged the people of the state to remain calm and refrain from taking laws in their hands
- Sylva apologises to President Buhari for the disruption in his schedule following cancellation of the inauguration ceremony David Lyon
Timipre Sylva, the minister of state for petroleum, has said the All Progressives Congress (APC) will restore its mandate in the Bayelsa governorship election following the Supreme Court judgment that sacked David Lyon as the governor-elect of Bayelsa state.
The minister in a statement on Sunday, February 16, said the legal team of the APC will explore all options available to the party to restore its mandate, The Nation reports.
He urged the people of the state to remain calm and advised them to refrain from taking laws in their hands.
The minister who is the leader of the APC in Bayelsa also apologised to President Muhammadu Buhari for disruption in his schedule following cancellation of the inauguration ceremony David Lyon.
Meanwhile, the APC has insisted that the PDP's candidate in the Bayelsa governorship election, Douye Diri, did not have the constitutional requirements to be declared the state's governor.
In an appeal letter sent to INEC, the APC national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, said his party affirmed the supremacy of the apex court's judgment but insisted Diri did not meet the requirement the court stated, Premium Times reports.
Oshiomhole said PDP's Diri did not meet the requirement to be declared as the governor. According to the APC chairman, two-thirds of at least eight local government areas in Bayelsa will be approximated to six local government areas.
Oshiomhole, however, said the PDP and its candidate only won in only five local government areas.
In another report, PDP has reportedly started making moves to beg Timi Alaibe to withdraw his suit against the candidacy of Governor Douye Diri.
The move is to ensure that Governor Diri does not suffer the same fate that befell David Lyon of the APC.
Lyon won the Bayelsa state governorship election but got sacked because his deputy presented false information to INEC.
The governorship aspirant who reportedly had the backing of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan wants the court to nullify Diri's candidacy and declare him the validly nominated governorship candidate of the party.
Legit.ng notes that the PDP did not really pay serious attention to the suit by Alaibe since it lost the governorship election.
However, after the Supreme Court judgment which made Diri the state governor, chieftains of the party, including Seriake Dickson, had started running around to beg Alaibe.
Alaibe is believed to have a strong case that may see Diri suffering a similar fate as APC's Lyon. The matter is still pending before the Federal High Court and hearing may resume soon.
