The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described as illegal the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s declaration of Duoye Diri as Bayelsa governor-elect.
Adams Oshiomhole, the APC national chairman on Friday, February 14, accused INEC of illegally declaring Diri as governor-elect.
The party’s chairman said by declaring Diri as the Bayelsa governor-elect, the electoral commission appropriated judicial powers to itself over the Supreme Court ruling that sacked David Lyon as Gov-elect, The Nation newspaper reports.
Oshiomhole said the APC will reclaim its mandate by seeking legal redress in court.
Meanwhile, members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors' forum have sent their congratulatory message to Duoye Diri over the Supreme Court ruling in Bayelsa.
On behalf of the PDP governors, the director-general of the forum, C.I.D. Maduabum, said that the verdict of the court proves that God is in charge over the affairs of men, The New Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
The governors prayed for God's wisdom on the new governor-elect to direct the affairs of the state for the next four years.
However, the recently sacked Bayelsa state governor-elect, David Lyon, has issued a statement in reaction to the Supreme Court’s judgement, that annulled his election that took place back in 2019. Vanguard reports that Lyon while speaking at a news conference in Yenagoa rejected the apex court’s ruling and called it a procured judgement.
The APC candidate who was represented by Preye Oseke who represents Southern Ijaw federal constituency said the judgement did not reflect the wish of the people.
The sacked governor-elect went on to demand that the INEC should not issue a certificate of return to Senator Douye Diri of the PDP.
Still on the Bayelsa election, suspected supporters of APC have reportedly raided the premises of Bayelsa state broadcasting corporation.
The protesters were said to have damaged and looted valuables to protest the declaration of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Douyi Diri, as the governor-elect of the state by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Doherty said that the entire APC should apologise to the nation for the degradation of all the democratic successes recorded by the PDP within the APC's short term as the ruling party in Nigeria.
Doherty said: “It is quite sad that the APC has gotten Nigeria into this democratically corrupt situation in this country, forgery, deceit, lies, thuggery, hate speech, disobedience of court orders, institutional harassment, judicial rascality, hijacking of constitutional powers, display of APC godfathers and leaders, disregard for constitutional authority, insecurity, bloodshed, kidnapping, massive money laundering, anti-people-oriented policies, economic corruption, witch-hunting, negative detrimental propaganda to the nation has become the order of the day during the 5 years the APC has ruled this country.
