Bayelsa: PDP members, Diri's supporters storm INEC office in Abuja

- There is tension among members of the PDP in Abuja over the Supreme Court's ruling on Bayelsa

- Members of the party are said to be at INEC's office awaiting the issuance of the certificate of return to Duoye Diri

- However, security officials have barred Diri from entering the office of the commission for the certificate

In anticipation of the issuance of the certificate of return, members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and supporters of Duoye Diri, have stormed the Abuja office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to Nigerian Tribune, members of the PDP who were in front of the office were allowed into the building for a closed-door meeting with top officials and commissioners of INEC.

However, Senator Duoye Diri, the PDP candidate of the last Bayelsa governorship election, was prevented by security officers from entering the office.

Diri was later asked by an official of INEC to stay away from the building until after the meeting.

Mixed reactions trail deregistration of 74 political parties

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the presidential candidate of the PDP during the 2019 general election, Atiku Abubakar, had reacted to the Supreme Court's judgement that sacked former Bayelsa state governor-elect, David Lyon.

Legit.ng gathered that in a dramatic turn, the apex court sacked Lyon over alleged certificate forgery levelled against his running mate, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremieoyo.

The Supreme Court had ruled that the offence committed by Degi-Eremieoyo affected the legitimacy of his joint ticket with Lyon.

In his reaction in a thread of tweets on Thursday, February 13, Atiku said he was happy that Diri was declared the duly elected governor of the state.

He said Diri had cause to visit him before the elections and received his blessings and counsel, adding that he was fully satisfied that the new governor had what it takes to make Bayelsa the glory of all lands.

Some APC members behind call for Buhari's resignation

"Senator Douye Diri had cause to visit with me before the elections and received my blessings and counsel. I am fully satisfied that he has what it takes to make Bayelsa the ‘glory of all lands’. His intellect, personality, and character, are a credit to Bayelsa and the PDP," he said.

Atiku, therefore, congratulated Diri and his running mate, Lawrence Ewhrujakpor, adding that the Lords justices gave them another opportunity to show Nigerians that power belongs to the people.
