The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the last gubernatorial election as the governor-elect of Bayelsa.
The chairman of the INEC, Mahmood Yakubu and some national commissioners were currently in a closed-door meeting at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
The Nation reports that although there has not been any official statement to why they are meeting, it was gathered that it was to further study the Supreme Court judgment which sacked David Lyon.
Legit.ng gathered that INEC national commissioner and chairman information and voters education committee, Festus Okoye, on Thursday, February 13, said the commission was studying the judgment.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) hinted that the party may file for the review of the Supreme Court judgment which sacked Lyon, as the governor-elect of Bayelsa state.
It was reported that in his official reaction to the ruling of the apex court, Oshiomhole said the party has already consulted its lawyers on the possible action to take to ensure the Lyon's mandate is restored.
The INEC had said that it would meet on Friday, February 14, to decide on the issuance of the certificate of return to the rightful winner of the Bayelsa governorship election.
This was revealed on Thursday, February 13, by the electoral commission's chief press secretary, Rotimi Oyekanmi, adding that the commission said it had not received a copy of the Supreme Court's verdict on Bayelsa with respect to an enrollment order.
Also, a special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on social media, Lauretta Onochie, on Friday, February 14, reacted to the Supreme Court's judgement that sacked Lyon.
The presidential aide in a statement posted on her Facebook page said the screening organ of the ruling APC should be blamed for the loss the party suffered in Bayelsa state.
Onochie said that in a statement titled, Beauty from ashes, that it is not the time to flex muscle, adding that the party leadership should reflect on how its screening organ failed Lyon and the people of the state.
