Hours to his swearing-in as governor of Bayelsa, David Lyon of the All Progressives Congress (APC) lost his bid to occupy the number one seat in the state, no thanks to the Supreme Court verdict that nullified his election.

It came as a surprise when the governor-elect was sacked by the apex judicial body. Lyon was already warming up for his swearing-in which was scheduled for Friday, February 14, when the news came in.

Photos have been circulating online, showing the governor-elect who is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the rehearsal for his swearing-in.

The photos show Lyon dressed in a multi-colored shirt, a pair of jeans, and white trainers, at the parade ground having his pre-swearing-in exercise.

Legit.ng had earlier reported the news of how Lyon and his deputy-elect Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo were sacked by the Supreme Court on Thursday, February 13.

Lyon’s running mate reportedly forged the certificate he presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the Bayelsa state election.

The reason given by the apex court for the sack was that Degi-Eremieoyo's forged certificate has affected the legitimacy of the joint ticket with Lyon.

The apex court also ordered INEC to issue a Certificate of Return to the candidate with the next highest number of votes in the governorship election.

As a result of this judgment, Diri Duoye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) becomes the next governor of Bayelsa state.

Reacting to the news, some Nigerians believe it was a fair judgement.

In a related development, the legal tussle between the governor-elect of Bayelsa state, Lyon, and the former federal lawmaker, Heineken Lokpobiri, over the governorship primary of the APC in the state, was finally put to rest.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday, February 11, dismissed the appeal filed by Senator Lokpobiri for lacking in merit. In a unanimous judgment delivered by Justice Inyang Okoro, the apex court held that the lower court was right in its decision as Lokpobiri filed his petition outside the 14 days allowed by law.
