The Supreme Court's verdict was based on a controversy surrounding the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo in the election.

A Federal High Court had disqualified Degi-Eremienyo from participating in the Bayelsa state governorship election, but an Appeal Court reversed it.

The Supreme Court by its ruling on Thursday, read by Justice Mary Odili, agreed with the ruling of the high court and declared Diri the authentic winner of the election.

Degi-Eremienyo disqualification meant that the APC had no valid candidates for the election.

Recall that the APC polled 352,552 while Diri's Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) polled 143,170 votes in the election.

In Bayelsa, PDP supporters are now celebrating the victory of their candidate.

Celebrations have also kicked-off in the Government House, Yenagoa where Governor Seriake Dickson is still present.

Meanwhile, in Imo, there have been massive protests in the state capital, Owerri, as residents in the state continue to call for the reinstatement of Emeka Ihedioha as the governor.

On Wednesday, February 12, popular entertainer, Charles Oputa jnr also known as Charly Boy, joined thousands of Imolites who took to the streets demanding justice.
