- The issue of asset declaration has been a reoccurring one since Buhari came into power

The presidency has clarified that President Muhammadu Buhari never promised to make his assets declaration public.

This was revealed by presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, at a book launch in Abuja on Tuesday, February 11.

Adesina was responding to the position of Bishop Matthew Kukah who was the guest speaker at the event.

Kukah, a well-respected cleric and fierce critic of the Buhari administration, had raised the issue while speaking earlier.

Adesina who reviewed the book, however, responded: “When I resumed work on June 1, 2015, in a private meeting with Mr President, one of the first questions I asked him was ‘this promise about public declaration of asset, when are you redeeming it?’ And then he answered me, ‘can you please show me where that promised was made?’

He said he searched everywhere and there was nowhere the president ever said he would do a public declaration.

Nigerians have been talking about Buhari's anti-corruption stance on social media.

Adewale Samuel Adeosun wrote: Buhari administration came to power on three fundamental promises which are corruption, security and poverty eradication but the truth is that they fail in all this area.

Mohammed Darma: I don't think Buhari truly believed he would be president. He thought he would remain a strong opposition force, a champion of the people, the anti-corruption crusader! Maybe he just wanted to be remembered as the best president we never had.

Ikenna Ochei: You cannot have wholesale looting of common resources and expect real development. This is the fundamental problem with our politics and political economy. Which is why the presidency of Buhari represents Nigeria's redemption from the stranglehold of grand-scale corruption.

Dibis Saidu Idris: We should stop deceiving ourselves. Baba Buhari has failed on security. He is trying on agriculture and doing very little on corruption. My Opinion!

Akusoronwa Chijioke: The Buhari government is either blaming the past government than providing solutions. The administration is always reactive instead of been proactive. From security-economy-health-infrastructure-human rights-corruption the govt is clueless!

Recall that four months ago, Mohammed Isah, the chairman of the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), says the bureau will not release the details of President Buhari’s and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s assets.

According to him, the details of their assets cannot be released because there is no guideline from the National Assembly that instructs the CCB to do so.

Earlier this year, Buhari and Osinbajo were given a 7-day ultimatum within which to publicly declare their assets by the Socio-Economic Right And Accountability Project (SERAP) on Saturday, January 4.

According to the organisation, the country's 36 state governors and their deputies have all been issued the same directive in Freedom of Information requests dated Saturday, January 3, 2020, and signed by SERAP's deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare.
