The federal government on Monday, February 10, made a presentation of the water use license to North South Gurara Power Company for the 30MW Gurara hydro-power plant station in Gurara area of Kaduna state.
The presentation of the license was made by the minister of water resources, Suleiman Adamu, who said that the beneficiary is expected to efficiently meet the high demands of water for domestic, agriculture, industry and other uses for Nigerian households.
A statement by the director of information to the minister, Kenechukwu Offie said the licensing of various water users have become very necessary and important to Nigeria.
Adamu said the government is upscaling revenue generation, job creation, improved agricultural production, provision of health facilities, and provision of potable water.
He also urged the beneficiary of the license to ensure effective use of the opportunity to develop, operate and maintain various projects in a sustainable manner.
Adamu said: "We welcome you on board as key stakeholders in the development of the water resources sector in Nigeria, even as we look forward to more years of a fruitful partnership."
Commending the efforts of the Nigeria Integrated Water Resources Management Commission (NIWRMC) in ensuring that various Water Users are encouraged to obtain Water Use Licenses, Adamu said such move is geared towards minimizing the incessant abstractions, diversion and damming of the resource.
Also speaking, the executive director of NIWRMC, Bashir Magashi, thanked the minister for his zeal to actualize the Water Resources Bill which will strengthen the activities of the Commission.
Bashir admonished the beneficiary of the license to adhere strictly to the terms and conditions made for the Water Use License No 00037 WL to ensure effective use of the Gurara River Water Flow and to make sure that the flow is not used for any purpose other than as specified in the license.
In his response, the chief executive officer of North South Gurara Power Company, Olubunmi Peters, appreciated the minister’s transparent and diligent process in the concession of the 30 Mega Watt Gurara Hydropower Plant awarded to his Company.
Peters promised to abide by the rules guiding the use of the license for the benefit of Nigerians.

The Benue state commissioner for health and human services, Sunday Ongbabo, said the controversy which occurred in Obi local government area was due to the consumption of the water by the victims.
