Convicted Army officer nabbed in Benin Republic after escaping from court

- Major A. A. Oseni, an army officer who escaped after being sentenced to 10 years in prison has been nabbed

- Oseni was apprehended in Benin Republic after a manhunt was launched to arrest him

- The army major fled after he was convicted along with three other officers over the alleged murder of another personnel

A report by Leadership newspaper indicates that the Nigerian Army major who escaped from court premises after he was convicted by a General Court Martial in Abuja has been captured in another country, Benin Republic.

The fleeing officer identified as Major Akeem Oseni was arrested at the Cotonou International Airport around 2pm on Monday, February 10. He was waiting to board a flight to the United States of America via a Cote D’Ivoire airline.

Oseni, one out of the three army personnel jailed over the death of another officer used the excuse that he wanted to use the restroom at the court before he escaped.

In an official statement confirming his capture, it was noted that Oseni is in the custody of the Benin Republican Force.

It was further explained in the statement that a lieutenant and a captain identified as Chime have been detained immediately for reportedly letting the escape from the court premises happen.

In order to investigate the situation, a board of inquiry was set up by the Nigerian Army to find out what happened.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported how the army officer was convicted for murder by a General Court Martial sitting at in Abuja, on Friday, February 7, and he escaped afterwards.

Oseni was charged alongside Major O. U. Osawe (N/12004), Captain S. E. Amosu, (N/13041), and 2Lieutenant N. B. Dogary (N/16390), for alleged manslaughter.

Specifically, the three accused officers were convicted for unlawfully causing the death of 09NA/63/3803 Lance Corporal Collins Benjamin. In military parlance, the alleged offense is referred to as “forward rolling.”
